Community, Military & Federal Facility Partnership of Northern Virginia

History
In September 2005, Virginia Governor Mark Warner created the Northern Virginia Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Committee to address recommendations issued a month earlier by the 2005 BRAC Commission and enacted by Congress on November 9, 2005

 The BRAC Commission called for:

  • The movement of more than 22,000 jobs out of leased office space in Alexandria, Arlington, and the Bailey's Crossroads area of Fairfax County
  • The addition of approximately 21,000 personnel to the US Army Garrison at Fort Belvoir in Fairfax County, and up to 5,000 personnel to the US Marine Corps Base at Quantico in Prince William and Stafford Counties
  • The Committee expected that the new BRAC would cause significant shifts in missions and employment at and among military installations in the area, including significant job gains, job losses and shifts, plus profound impacts on the economy, transportation system, and educational system.
  • NVRC response was the BRAC Committee that is now formally known as the Community, Military & Federal Facility Partnership of Northern Virginia.
  • The Partnership is chaired by NVRC Past Chair and member of the Fairfax Board of Supervisors, Penny Gross.
  • The Partnership is made up of elected officials, business leaders, and academic institutions and military personnel from around the region
  • The Community, Military & Federal Facility Partnership of Northern Virginia is uniquely positioned to provide the strategic leadership to ensure regional coordination.
  • Using regional solutions to address challenges, NVRC established the Community, Military & Federal Facility Partnership of Northern Virginia made up of elected officials, business leaders, academic institutions, and military personnel from around the region
