About Us

NoVA Outside is an alliance of environmental educators from Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, and Arlington who are connecting and teaching people of all ages about their natural environment:

  • We come from schools, businesses, nature centers, non-profits, “green” groups, and government agencies
  • We are committed to sharing information, resources, talents and energy to expand the capacity of environmental education leaders throughout the Northern Virginia area
  • All who are interested are welcome to participate

The alliance was formed in Spring 2009 as a regional network of the Virginia Office of Environmental Education:

  • To-date, we have established a mailing list of more than 400 people who receive bimonthly updates on events, resources, and volunteer opportunities
  • In March we sponsored an event on the Science Behind Time Outdoors and Healthy Lives
  • With a new grant from the state we held a teacher training event in the fall of 2010
  • In addition, we will be hosting an environmental leaders conference in early 2011, and hope to have other activities as well
  • We have obtained an additional grant to train after school staff to provide activities outside weekly in ten northern Virginia lower-income elementary schools

Girl Watering Plants
“Concerns about long-term consequences—affecting emotional well-being, physical health, learning abilities, environmental consciousness—have spawned a national movement to ‘leave no child inside.’ In recent months, it has been the focus of Capitol Hill hearings, state legislative action, grassroots projects, a U.S. Forest Service initiative to get more children into the woods and a national effort to promote a ‘green hour’ in each day.”
— Washington Post, June 2007
