With funding from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, NVRC assisted member localities in preparing a regional hazard mitigation plan
, which was completed in July 2006.
Currently, this plan addresses natural hazards such as flooding, winter storms, and wildfires. It assesses hazards, establishes mitigation goals and objectives, and identifies projects that will help the region and its constituent local jurisdictions prepare for, and reduce the impacts of, natural disasters.
The Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires all localities to develop and adopt a hazard mitigation plan, or participate in and adopt a regional plan, in order to be eligible for funding through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program and Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant Program.
