Jail and Prison Issues
Jails and prisons house populations with a high HIV prevalence and high risks of transmission in a system where the jailer, responsible for controlling behavior and costs, is often also responsible for health care.

Those in jail or prison face unique difficulties including:

  • Keeping their disease status private
  • Protecting themselves from infection
  • Receiving and/or obtaining appropriate treatment for HIV/AIDS
