The Project
As the Washington Metropolitan area continues to suffer from one of the worst traffic problems in the nation, it becomes clear that reducing congestion in the region will require a multimodal approach. While many of our highways and Metrorail lines are consistently overburdened by commuter traffic, our many waterways remain an untapped resource. The Potomac River Fast Ferry Project was conceived of as a transportation alternative to existing infrastructure for commuters, tourists, and military personnel.

[In cities around the nation,] ferries are providing viable commuter options, driving economies, connecting communities and business districts along and near the water, and reducing congestion and emissions… The commuter ferry is a logical next step for our region’s transportation system.” — Paul “Chip” Jaenichen, Maritime Administrator, US Department of Transportation
