Bike/Pedestrian Safety Instructors Graduate

For the second consecutive year the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) offered League of American Bicyclist licensed certified instructor training to 12 candidates. The training took place over the weekend of April 26-28. This training creates teachers on bicycling and walking safety. The volunteers committed over 50 hours of work and training, in exchange for at least 2 community outreach events.

The 2019 class represents committed volunteers passionate about encouraging non-motorized transportation and safety in the region. A number are teachers or committed commuters with great ideas and enthusiasm for outreach. They represent many communities in the region, including Prince William, Fairfax, Arlington, and Alexandria.

If you have a need for safety education, a group or event that could use a bike rodeo, a bicycling or a pedestrian safety course, please contact Debbie Spiliotopoulos of NVRC at Dspilio@novaregion.org. Also visit our dedicated web site to bike and pedestrian safety at www.sharevaroads.org.

The goal of this effort is to increase education and reduce pedestrian and bicyclist crash injuries and deaths. An average of two people a day are injured or killed in the region. Last year's graduates have already reached over 500 people and logged in over 90 volunteer hours. By connecting with passionate volunteers, the reach of safety education extends beyond the grant year.

Funding for this program is generously provided by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles through a highway safety grant.
